February 18, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

Ahead of its UK release this April, MUBI has shared a new trailer for Paul Verhoeven’s (Basic Instinct, Elle) latest, the erotic drama Benedetta. Based on Judith C. Brown’s non-fiction book Immodest Acts: The Life of a Lesbian Nun in Renaissance Italy, the film stars Virginie Efira as a 17th century nun who suffers from disturbing religious and erotic visions; watch it here…

Set in the late 17th century and inspired by true events, a woman joins a convent in Pescia, Tuscany as a plague ravages the land that surrounds it. Capable of performing miracles from an early age, Benedetta becomes entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair that will threaten to shake the Church to its core.

Benedetta stars Virginie Efira (Elle), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), Daphné Patakia (Nimic), Lambert Wilson (The Matrix Reloaded) and Olivier Rabourdin (Eastern Boys)

Benedetta arrives in UK cinemas on April 15th and exclusively on MUBI from July 1st 2022.
