Rashida Jones to star in Apple TV+ and A24 dark comedy series Sunny

February 9, 2022 by Ricky Church

Rashida Jones (Parks and Recreation) is set to lead Sunny, a dark comedy series from Apple TV+ and A24, which has been created by The Affair’s Katie Robbins.

Sunny is based on the novel Dark Manual by Colin O’Sullivan and follows “Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As ‘consolation’ she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company. Though at first Suzie resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, gradually they develop an unexpected friendship, as together they uncover the dark truth of what really happened to Suzie’s family, becoming dangerously enmeshed in a world Suzie never knew existed.”

Robbins is writing and showrunning the series. Jones will executive produce alongside A24’s Ravi Nandan and Jess Lubben, while Lucy Tcherniak (The End of the F***ing World) is set to direct and executive produce.

Sunny has received a 10-episode series order from Apple TV+.
