Hayden Christensen discusses his Darth Vader return in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi

April 4, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

Seventeen years after donning the armor for the closing moments of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Hayden Christensen makes his return to the galaxy far, far away next month as he reprises the role of Darth Vader to square off against his former master in the Disney+ series Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Christensen has been discussing how it felt returning to the character almost two decades on from the Prequel Trilogy, describing the experience as “amazing”.

“It was mostly a lot of excitement because I had spent enough time with this character and felt like I knew him, and coming back to it felt very natural in a lot of ways,” states Christensen. “And I was just really excited to get to come in and play Darth Vader at this point in the timeline because it did feel like a natural continuation of your journey with the character. And that was very meaningful for me.”

“The whole experience was very surreal,” he continues. “Just the nature of coming back after all this time. It’s such a unique opportunity — one that both Ewan and I were very grateful for… I don’t know what I can share in terms of behind-the-scenes type stuff because I don’t think they want me saying too much, but I can tell you the first time that I saw Ewan as Obi-Wan again, that was a very special moment for me and one that I’ll remember for a very, very long time.”

“During the reign of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi embarks on a crucial mission. Kenobi must confront allies turned enemies and face the wrath of the Empire.”

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is being directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian), with McGregor joined in the cast by Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader), Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars) and Bonnie Piesse (Beru Lars), as well as Star Wars newcomers Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Maya Erskine, Benny Safdie and Grant Feely.

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ on May 27th.
