Star Wars: Kathleen Kennedy reveals “We’re still talking about Lando with Donald Glover”

May 31, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

With Star Wars Celebration having just taken place in California, there has been a galaxy’s worth of news flying our way these past few days; the trailer for Rogue One spin-off Star Wars: Andor dropped, we got a look at Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2, and then there was the eagerly anticipated debut of Star Wars: Obi-Wan on Disney+. One detail that slipped through the net, especially in the wake of Kathleen Kennedy’s comments about no longer recasting legacy characters with younger actors, was the news that they’re still exploring the idea of a Lando Calrissian series with Donald Glover.

Total Film managed to grab a quick audience with the Lucasfilm head-honcho and asked her directly about her reported comments, to which she replied “I never say never. It’s certainly not something that we’re doing with any intention right now. We’re still talking about Lando with Donald Glover, for instance, but I don’t think we would intentionally just look back at some of the characters like Luke and Leia and whatnot and decide arbitrarily to do a story. There would have to be a really strong reason why.”

Despite underperforming to the tune of $392M at the worldwide box-office in 2018, Solo: A Star Wars Story has grown in popularity since its release, with many singling out the performance of Donald Glover as the cape wearing Lando Calrissian as a key reason for this. The duplicitous smuggler was a role originally made famous by Billy Dee Williams, who reprised it again for 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

This isn’t the first time that a Lando TV series has been talked about, with Kathleen Kennedy revealing back in 2020 that Lucasfilm was in early development on a limited series, so fans will be hoping that the constant chatter will eventually lead to a return of Glover’s incarnation of the character, much in the same way that Ewan McGregor eventually got to don the Jedi robe again after years of “Old Ben” style rumours.

The good news for fans of Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t end there, because a final grace note was offered up by Kennedy when she was asked about the future of Han Solo, to which she responded “There’s always a future for Solo!”
