James Wan shares Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom concept art

August 29, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

The bad news for fans of the DC Extended Universe kept on coming this past week with the announcement from Warner Bros. that both Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have been pushed back once again, the latter of which now finding itself over a year away in the dark depths of Winter 2023.

To soften the blow, Aquaman director James Wan has taken to Instagram to offer a sneak peek at the superhero sequel courtesy of a batch of rather gorgeous concept art featuring some of the film’s locations, another large scale battle, and an underwater showdown between Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta.

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom moving to Christmas Day 2023. I’m a bit superstitious and I love that it’s a December release like the first one,” writes Wan. “Here is a small glimpse of some artwork into the big, epic world-building we’re creating, and I need the time to do it right. These images barely scratch the surface of this movie (haven’t even shown the weird and wonderful characters and creatures of this world yet). I can’t wait to show, but you have to wait just a little bit longer ;)”

“When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.”

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom reunites Jason Momoa with director James Wan and co-stars Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Temuera Morrison (Tom Curry), Randall Park (Stephen Shin) and Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus), while Ben Affleck returns as Bruce Wayne. New additions to the cast include Indya Moore (Queen & Slim) as Karshon, Vincent Regan (300) as King Atlan, Jani Zhao (South) as Stingray, and Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) in an as-yet-unrevealed role.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set for release on Christmas Day 2023.
