Doctor Who – The War Doctor Begins: He Who Fights With Monsters audio drama coming this December

October 21, 2022 by Andrew Newton

Big Finish Productions has released details for Doctor Who – The War Doctor Begins: He Who Fights With Monsters, a brand new audio drama box set coming this December.   This epic new three hour audio adventure follows the War Doctor (voiced by Jonathon Carley) as he is ordered to assassinate the Barber-Surgeon, a fellow Time Lord.

This suspenseful full-cast audio drama written by Robert Valentine consists of three episodes telling the story of the Doctor’s mission to assassinate the Barber-Surgeon (played by stage and screen star Nicholas Le Prevost).

Episode One, titled The Mission, sees the Time War take a dark turn as a Gallifreyan renegade known as the Barber-Surgeon is waging their own campaign on both the Daleks and Time Lords.  The Time War Council has tasked the Doctor with locating and assassinating this renegade but can the Doctor carry this mission out without become what he hates?

In The Abyss (Episode 2), the Doctor is on the trail of the Barber-Surgeon yet always seems to be one step behind.  With his mysterious quarry anticipating his every move and the Daleks being close behind him the Doctor begiuns to think his  journey through the ravages of the Time War may be the last one he makes.

Finally in Episode 3, The Horror, the Doctor is missing in Action and the forces of the two great enemies converge on the realm of the Barber-Surgeon.  With Gallifrey and Skaro facing total destruction and the renegade warmonger preparing to unleash his ultimate weapon, what or Who can possibly stop him?

Jonathon Carley plays the War Doctor

Writer Robert Valentine said “I’ve always had a lot of questions about the War Doctor in terms of how bad he got for the other Doctors to fear and ostracize him the way they do.  I think the Doctor feared entering the Time War because he knows that if anyone can finish this, it’s him. He fears that if he abandons his Doctor qualities and values, whatever is left of him would not only be unbeatable but monstrous.”

As well as the talents of Jonathon Carley as the Doctor and Nicholas Le Prevost, Doctor Who – The War Doctor Begins: He Who Fights With Monsters features Ken Bones as the General, Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks and Jason Merrells as a ruthless Dalek cyborg assassin.

Doctor Who – The War Doctor Begins: He Who Fights With Monsters is available to pre-order now from the Big Finish website for £19.99 as the Collector’s Edition CD box set + download or £16.99 for the download only.  Big Finish fans can purchase all four volumes of The War Doctor Begins together in a bundle for just £76 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £66 (download only).
