Daniel Craig says James Bond’s tragic fate in No Time To Die was “good thing to end on”

November 24, 2022 by EJ Moreno

The death of James Bond caused quite a stir in No Time To Die. Some fans hated it, some were indifferent, but no one wanted it to happen more than Bond himself, Daniel Craig.

During his recent promotional tour for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Craig finally opened up about the shocking ending of the film and the reasons why it needed to happen.

Telling The Los Angeles Times, Craig notes one reason: he felt the producers could more easily find a replacement if he were killed.

“Two things, one for myself and one for the franchise. I was like, ‘Well, you need to reset again.’ So let’s kill my character off and go find another Bond and go find another story. Start at [age] 23, start at 25, start at 30. The other was so that I could move on. I don’t want to go back. I suppose I should be so lucky if they were to ask me back, but the fact is I need to move on from it. The sacrifice that he makes in the movie was for love, and there’s no greater sacrifice. So it seemed like a good thing to end on.”

For those unaware, during the heartbreaking finale of No Time To Die, Craig’s James Bond becomes infected with a nanobot vial programmed to kill his lover and his estranged daughter. Bond stays on an island and lets missiles strike the island, killing him and keeping his family safe. The death caused a bit of an uproar from traditional James Bond fans, while others found it a needed conclusion to this era.

As reported, we are far from seeing a new James Bond crowned. Producer Barbara Broccoli noted the process takes a while because “it’s a big commitment. It’s not just showing up for a couple of months of filming.”

Daniel Craig obviously wanted to move on, as he is gleefully playing the beloved detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out films. With the upcoming release of Glass Onion, Craig still has one more outing as Blanc planned since Netflix signed Johnson and Craig to a two-film deal.

You’re invited to put the pieces together. In the follow-up to Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery stars Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will be released in theatres November 23rd and arrive on Netflix on December 23rd.
