Rachel Morrison’s latest film Love of Your Life is an earnest and heartfelt study of romance, grief and trauma in this timely film featuring Margaret Qualley in a emotionally stunning performance. Between the acting, writing and cinematography, the film succeeds in pulling you in with its depth and chemistry between Qualley and many of her costars.
Qualley stars as Maya, a young nurse who has grown up largely independent and is used to being by herself until she meets Charlie, played by The Night Agent‘s Gabriel Basso. The two strike up a romance and all goes well until the covid pandemic hits, putting her life on a new path as the job takes its toll and tragedy strikes close to home. Qualley is terrific as Maya, conveying her intelligence, compassion and wit which is later juxtaposed by how adrift she is post-covid. The range she displays is vast as Maya bounces between various emotions throughout the years the film takes place over. She places a lot of the role’s emphasis in her body language, particularly in the film’s second half as Maya shuts down and tries burying as many of her feelings as possible.
The chemistry Qualley shares with her castmates is fantastic, especially between her and Basso as their whirlwind romance is believable and emotional. They make interesting foils for each other which compliments their characters insights with Maya growing up looking after herself and Charlie in a big and loving family. Basso adds likeable and endearing quirks to Charlie like his witty humour mixed with intelligent and philosophical views on art.
Patrick Schwarzenegger also stars as their best friend and the chemistry is easy, particularly with Qualley, in believing their are yearslong close friends while Aaron Pierre brings a sense of comfort and a fresh perspective on life to the movie once he and Maya are introduced. Meanwhile, Catherine Keener gives a heart-wrenching portrayal as Charlie’s mother. All the performances are emotionally charged and make you feel the full weight of the story being told.
As the story takes place over several years, there is an episodic nature to the structure as time jumps occur but it all feeds into a coherent narrative with the characters evolution feeling natural thanks to the performances and Morrison’s direction with Julia Cox’s script. The use of cinematography in the narrative is fantastic as it is just one of Morrison’s tools to bring us closer to Maya and the emotional beats as well as showing off beautiful scenery in Spain, Portugal and other countries she visits.
Morrison’s Love of Your Life wears its emotions on its sleeve. It is a poignant look at love, grief and life with a stunning cast led by Qualley’s great performance. It is a romantic drama that hardly gets made nowadays as it successfully pulls at the heartstrings and has something important to say on the human condition and need for connection rather than succumbing to cynicism or easy happily ever afters.
