J.K. Simmons playing Santa Claus alongside Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans in Red One

November 12, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Having kicked off production earlier this week on the Dwayne Johnson-led holiday action movie Red One, The Rock has now announced on social media that Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons has joined the cast of the Amazon film in the role of Santa Claus.

Officially announcing the start of filming, Johnson shared several images to his Instagram this past week, including shots of him alongside Simmons’ Saint Nick and co-star Chris Evans.

Red One is being directed by Johnson’s Jumani helmer Jake Kasdan from a script by Chris Morgan (Hobbs & Shaw), and sees Johnson, Evans and Simmons joined in the cast by Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Nick Kroll, Kristofer Hivju, Wesley Kimmel and Bonnie Hunt.

Specific plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, but has been described by Amazon Studios as “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre.”

Amazon will unwrap Red One during the 2023 holiday season.
