The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special sets up Guardians Vol. 3, says James Gunn

November 23, 2022 by EJ Moreno

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 just around the corner, fans are curious about where the fan-favorite Marvel team is following Endgame and their cameos in Thor: Love and Thunder.

We’ll get a hint at what the Guardians are doing and how their third film is shaping up in their upcoming Christmas Disney+ event. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special arrives this week, and director James Gunn says it will set up the next theatrical film perfectly.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Gunn says, “You’re obviously gonna learn a lot about where the Guardians have been in the past few years. You know, you’re gonna see how they now inhabit Knowhere. They’ve got a new ship called the Bowie. They’ve got a dog [who] is part of their crew now who has telekinesis named Cosmo… and then there’s a couple of bigger pieces of spoiler-y lore.”

You’re gonna learn all of those things,” Gunn continues. In a way, the Holiday Special was a Trojan Horse for me to sneak in stuff that becomes important in Vol. 3, so I don’t have to spend a lot of time at the beginning of that movie explaining it.”

The filmmaker, and future head of DC Studios, noted in another interview that the Holiday Special also helped out the actual production of Vol.3. Gunn tells The Hollywood Reporter that they used some sets to pad out the third installment. Gunn notes, “We were able to utilize those sets that we had the money to build for Vol. 3 in the special. We otherwise wouldn’t have had that type of money to build these million-dollar sets.”

With the epic conclusion of James Gunn’s chapter off the history of the Guardians of the Galaxy, we’ll see the filmmaker and all the actors give their all to give the fans a perfect send-off. While we will surely see the characters in the future, Gunn’s time as the captain of the ship is nearing the end as he begins his new venture as the creative head of DC Studios.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is directed by James Gunn and features a cast that includes Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Bradley Cooper (Rocket Raccoon), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Sean Gunn (Kraglin), Maria Bakalova (Cosmo) and Kevin Bacon as himself.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will debut on Disney+ this November 25th. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in cinemas on May 5th, 2023.
