Matt Reeves and James Gunn set the record straight over The Batman becoming mainline DC

December 15, 2022 by EJ Moreno

It’s been a hectic week for the new creative head of DC Studios, James Gunn. All week, there’s been reports about the soon-to-be revamped DC movies, and Gunn has spent most of the time addressing rumors, as well as confirming a Superman reboot with Henry Cavill’s time as the Man of Steel now officially over.

Before that, Gunn took time to address a report from Variety claiming that Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe would soon become fold into the central DC Cinematic Universe vision. In the article, writer Adam B. Vary said discussions were underway between Gunn, Reeves, and DC Studios co-chair Peter Safran about using the Robert Pattinson-led Batman movies as the launching point for that character in the new DCU plans.

Gunn addressed the rumors while not shading the reporter behind the story. The filmmaker starts with, “There are few reporters I love more than @adambvary – truly a good guy.” Before going on to add, “but in this case, he needs to get a new source as this is entirely untrue.”

Later, The Batman director Matt Reeves tweeted in agreement with Gunn, saying, “The source I’m really liking on this is Mr. @JamesGunn.”

The Batman proved to be a critical and commercial success, pulling in over $700 million worldwide. It also played well in the awards season as it was recently nominated for three Critics Choice Awards, including Best Visual Effects and Best Score.

While Gunn continues to plot out his DC Studios future, Matt Reeves is hard at work to bring to life The Batman 2 for fans, although the sequel isn’t expected until 2025 at the earliest.
