The Wheel of Time animated prequel The White Tower in development

July 14, 2023 by Ricky Church

The Wheel of Time franchise is about to grow a little larger as the animated film The White Tower has been announced to be in development. The film comes from screenwriter and Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous creator Zack Stentz, The Wheel of Time producing studio iwot productions and Quebec animation studio Squeeze Studios.

The White Tower will take place before the events of The Wheel of Time novels and the Amazon TV series, following “a young girl with a special gift whose life is forever changed when evil visits her remote mountain village. Finding herself alone in a dangerous world, she must go to The White Tower to learn how to use her magical powers in order to save her family and friends.” The film will be an original story from Stentz that is set in Robert Jordans vast Wheel of Time mythology.

The White Tower serves as the headquarters for the Aes Sedai, an organization of women with a connection to the mystical One Power and help steer the course of history by serving as advisors to various kings and queens. Young women who have shown a potential to channel the One Power are sent to train as members of the Aes Sedai and are also paired with a Warder, a bodyguard who will protect them for life.

“I have been a lifelong fan of the world Robert Jordan created, particularly The White Tower, which serves the mysterious Aes Sedai sisterhood as a capitol, residence, school, and fortress,” said Stentz. “It was a dream fulfilled to be offered the opportunity to author a new story that takes place within an iconic setting that will be immediately familiar to Jordan fans around the world.”

The White Tower will be produced by Stentz and iwot’s Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon, both of whom executive produce the Amazon Wheel of Time adaptation. “The animation platform has given us the means to expand The Wheel of Time experience by targeting a young adult audience while remaining loyal to the world long cherished by Wheel of Time fans,” said Selvage. “The White Tower is an action-packed adventure, with a transcendent message of female empowerment that will inspire a new generation of imaginative young women.”

Squeeze CEO Denis Doré said “The opportunity to bring a unique visual style to the vast immersive world of The Wheel of Time aligns with our company mission and passion to provide high quality animation that entertains and engages audiences of all demographics. Our team is highly motivated to bring this amazing project to life!”

There is no word on when The White Tower is expected to be released. The Wheel of Time will premiere its second season on Amazon Prime September 1st.
