Taylor Swift concert movie scares The Exorcist: Believer into changing release date

What’s more powerful when it comes to warding off demonic possession? A crucifix wielding priest spitting the word of God, or an army of Swifties setting pre-sale records for the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert movie? If you put your faith in the former then you’d be wrong, because Universal/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek’s The Exorcist: The Believer is switching release dates to avoid Tay Tay’s ticket stampede. 

The news came as it was reported ticket presales for AMC’s concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour have already hit $10 million and counting, putting it on par with a number of Marvel movies in terms of opening day grosses. Industry experts predict it could open bigger than 2008’s Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, which earned $31M over its opening weekend.

The news quickly made its way to the powers-that-be at Universal, and according to Deadline they acted swiftly and moved the release date of The Exorcist: Believer up a week to October 6 instead of October 13. The film’s producer Jason Blum took to social media to confirm the news using the hashtag #TaylorWins.

With a relatively free run at the seasonal box-office, Universal will be hoping that their latest legacy-horror reboot can make the same impact as director David Gordon Green’s Halloween, which opened with $76.2 million in 2018.
