Small screen Baywatch reboot is afloat at Fox

March 4, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Following 2017’s lamentable Baywatch big-screen outing, you might be forgiven for thinking they’d let the idea of resuscitating the life-saving series sink to the bottom the ocean. However, Fox has thrown a buoyancy aid around a small screen reboot by inking a deal with Freemantle for a new series of the one-hour drama.

According to Variety Fox and Freemantle have hired Lara Olsen (Spinning Out, 90210) to serve as showrunner for the new Baywatch, which comes with fresh log-line in tow: “Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”

Originally created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann, Baywatch starred David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Alexandra Paul, Erika Eleniak, and Nicole Eggert, among others, running from 1989 to 1999, before it was re-branded as Baywatch: Hawaii from 1999 to 2001. The last time the show aired on television was for a 2003 reunion special titled Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding.

Despite a negative reaction from critics to the Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson-led big-screen outing, Baywatch still managed to gross $178 million at the worldwide box-office.
