5 Actresses Who Should Play Captain Marvel

December 26, 2014 by Thomas Roach

Thomas Roach with five actresses who should play Captain Marvel…

One of the projects Marvel is working on for Phase Three is Captain Marvel, which will be the studio’s first female led superhero movie. So far the new characters of Black Panther and Doctor Strange have been cast with Chadwick Boseman and Benedict Cumberbatch securing the respective roles, but there’s been no official news or word about actresses under consideration for the role of Carol Danvers. So, here are five actresses who should play Captain Marvel…

Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer has been a rising star over the past few years. Having starred in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones as well as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 she is becoming more sought after in Hollywood. Dormer actually appeared briefly in Captain America: The First Avenger but with such a small part there could be more room for her to take on a leading role in a Marvel movie. If fans can let this go and she is given a chance I think she would really shine in the role of Captain Marvel.

Katheryn Winnick

Katheryn Winnick seems to be another fan favourite to take on the role of Captain Marvel. She certainly looks the part and has gained popularity and acclaim for her role in Vikings. Winnick actually trained to be a bodyguard and holds black belts in Karate and Tae Kwon Do so she could kick ass in this role. She could certainly use those skills to play such a bad ass female character and this gives her a step up over other people on this list.

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain has supposedly met with Marvel over the past year and she had also been considered for the role of Maya Hansen in Iron Man 3 and Hope Van Dyne in Ant-Man. She had to decline both of these due to conflicts with other movies. Chastain does want to appear in a superhero film and has expressed interest playing a character with superpowers. She’s an accomplished actress and seems very keen to take on the role of a superhero. Captain Marvel at the moment is her best bet and she could certainly do a great job. The only issue with her is that she is 37 years old and if she plays this role for 10 years she will be pushing 50. Age shouldn’t really matter but I’m not sure a studio would want an actress in their late 40s kicking ass. Still, I’d be happy to see Marvel keep her on for years to come.

Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt was actually the first choice to play Black Widow but was forced to turn the part down due to scheduling conflicts with Gulliver’s Travels. She has recently expressed an interest in Captain Marvel although she has revealed that no talks have taken place between her and the studio. Personally I think Blunt would have made a great Black Widow but seeing as she was unable to take the role, playing Captain Marvel may be the next best thing. After seeing her in Edge of Tomorrow she has proven herself in an action role and we already know she is a talented actress.

Yvonne Strahovski

Yvonne Strahovki bares a striking resemblance to the character of Captain Marvel and has been an up and comer over the last few years. She still seems to be waiting for her big break but has still starred in lots of popular television, most recently 24: Live Another Day. She also had the lead female role in Chuck and guest starred in Dexter., although she’s not been in many movies yet. This might make her a risk for Marvel but the studio has previously taken relatively unknown names and turned them into stars overnight.

Honorable Mention – Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence is probably the biggest female star in the world right now and that wont likely change anytime soon. Many fans have suggested Lawrence play Captain Marvel but unfortunately for them this is highly unlikely. By the time that Captain Marvel goes into production, Lawrence will have completed two massive franchises, The Hunger Games and X-Men. Lawrence has apparently expressed a lack of interest in taking on new franchises after these ones have expired. Fans can hope, but this is a real long shot if you ask me…

Who would you like to see play Captain Marvel? Let us know…
