Comic Book Review – Star Trek #45

May 13, 2015 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch reviews – Star Trek #45…

“Eurydice, Part 3 of 3.” Trapped deep in the Delta Quadrant, Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise fight for their lives to escape the clutches of the Dark Market syndicate! Don’t miss this all-new adventure produced in association with STAR TREK writer/producer Roberto Orci!

After the Away Team have been stabbed in back by Eurydice and the ship and crew have been used to be bartered with – for whatever Eurydice needed from the Syndicate – it’s now up to Kirk & Co. to find a way out of this trap, then out of the Dark Market and begin their journey out of the Delta Quadrant.   It’s in the opening pages we discover what was so important to Eurydice that she would hand over so many lives, yet the guilt of doing something so low weighs heavy on her soul.  It’s a good thing too for as Kirk is speaking in code with Sulu, the Away Team have been sold – for profit – to a biologist for vivisection.

This closing chapter of Eurydice seems to be over somewhat too quickly – everything happens that to bit fast wrapping it up fairly neatly with everyone coming up smelling of roses, except of course the Syndicate and the Dark Market.  Kirk – the cad – even comes out of this with his first “girl in every spaceport”.  While a very happy ending isn’t an overly bad thing by any means, it just doesn’t feel right here.  Kirk and Eurydice have just interfered with the Syndicate and its Dark Market, Eurydice herself attempted to sell the entire crew off for slavery, and yet in the final scenes it is all Tri-dimensional Chess and Space Snogs.

With the above all being said, Mike Johnson does keep the story flowing along at some speed and shows that the crew know and function together as a unit and will continue to do so. He’s also opened the door to a returning character and possibly a returning thorn in the Enterprise’s side too.  In the art department again Tony Shasteen floats between good and not so good – the larger panels can look quite impressive but when the small panels arrive faces can start to appear deformed.  I’ve said all this before – I know – and hopefully we will see a rotation of artists on the Trek comics so I don’t have to keep repeating these lines every month.

Eurydice Part 3 is an “okay” closing chapter to the first episode of the five year mission, but it just ended a bit too nicely for my liking.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
