Channing Tatum and producer Reid Carolin talk Gambit movie

July 2, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Now that 20th Century Fox has found a director for its Gambit movie in Rupert Wyatt, the studio can starting moving forward with its third X-Men movie of 2016. Digital Spy caught up with star Channing Tatum and producer Reid Carolin during the Magic Mike XXL press tour this week, during which Tatum was asked about the film’s progress, including his accent for the Cajun mutant.

“It’s all being worked on at the moment. I’m from the south, so I know who to go to to find the accent. But I haven’t found ‘the guy’ yet, because generally that’s how I do accents. Like, I’ll find the person that I want to sound like and not just do a generic Cajun accent. So I haven’t found ‘the guy’ yet but the cards are always… they’re right there, actually.”

Tatum then spoke about whether we might see Gambit’s traditional purple costume from the comic books, stating that: “That’s kind of the fun part, to massage it, you can’t just, like, do it how people think. You want to give it some base of reality. If you do do it, you got to make it sort of relative to the reality.”

Reid Carolin then went on to deflect a question about how they’ll integrate the spinoff into Fox’s wider X-Men universe: “You know, I think that’s sort of an evolving conversation – we’re kind of figuring that out as we go. But this is a standalone movie and it’s the story of Gambit and we’ll probably gradually integrate that character into the X-Men universe as we go. And as far as what characters from the X-Men universe make it into the movie — we’re not exactly sure yet, so we’re figuring it out. It’s still at the script stage.”

Gambit is slated for release on October 7th 2016 – so it would seem they’d best get a move on figuring everything out…
