The Flash Season 4 Episode 20 Review – ‘Therefore She Is’

May 5, 2018 by Jessie Robertson

Jessie Robertson reviews the twentieth episode of The Flash season 4…

‘Therefore She Is’, is naïve while being brilliant. Tonight’s episode focuses on some flashbacks that take us back to see how this happy couple, the DeVoes, came to be. It reminds me of exactly no one else’s courtship. Once they start dating, Marlize discovers DeVoe’s evil journal that details what he calls “The Enlightenment.” It’s an idea he has that takes society back to pre-technology. This is a giant problem, as, DeVoe has come across most if not all of his power through technology. He floats around in a freaking scientific throne, for Hera’s sake!

So, we venture to Kenya then, where Marlize was trying to perfect a water science to help a local village but the village was ravaged by a local warlord and then she begins to buy into her husband’s plan. Does this actually hold water? Not really. The motivation of our big bad for the season just sort of collapses on it’s own infantile weight. It doesn’t make a bit of sense on the face of it but it definitely is a motivation. Where oh where do we go from here?

At the very least, this does tie into what’s going on with Harry. DeVoe plans on using dark matter to “dumb down” the world, hence the affliction hitting Harry, who Tom Cavanagh was very good in this episode. It was nice to see Cecile again, who I really enjoyed with her mind powers; it’s ridiculous, but very entertaining. Her reading Harry’s thoughts as they left his brain was also an interesting idea. Then you had Cisco; it looks like the relationship that should not have been has come to an end. It’s a weird thing for it to end now, after we’ve barely seen Gypsy in weeks and she was a cool character, but I guess that’s all over now. So, there were some interesting concepts throughout but being a heavy DeVoe episode, I just honestly didn’t have a lot of interest. Now, some food for thought…..our mysterious lady was back again this week……could she possibly be attending the very baby shower that’s for her?

Rating: 6/10
