The Simpsons passes Gunsmoke for the most scripted primetime episodes in U.S. TV history

With its 30th anniversary fast approaching, The Simpsons has just overtaken the classic Western series Gunsmoke to become the U.S. television series with the most scripted primetime episodes in history.

The Simpsons achieved the feat this past Sunday with its 636th episode ‘Forgive and Regret’, adding to its numerous records including the longest-running American sitcom, longest running American animated series, and longest-running scripted American primetime series in terms of seasons.

In celebration, here’s a Gunsmoke-inspired opening parody…

The Simpsons airs on Fox on Sunday nights, and has been renewed for a 30th season will will get underway later this year, carrying it through to its 30th anniversary in 2019.
