Former Gambit Taylor Kitsch gives Channing Tatum his blessing

July 9, 2015 by James Garcia

Channing Tatum may be playing Ragin’ Cajun Remy LeBeau in 2016’s Gambit solo film, but he’s not the first actor to play the card-throwing mutant on the big screen. That title belongs to True Detective and Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch, who played the character in the critically derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

When the X-Men universe was course-corrected with last year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, many hoped that Kitsch would once again get the chance to play Gambit, if for nothing else than continuity reasons. According to Kitsch, that was never even an option. In a new interview with The Daily Beast, he said:

“Um…no, I didn’t have a go. Ever since we finished the movie, it’s never really been an option. But no, I wish [Channing] nothing but the best. It was a fun character to play, and I learned a lot working with Hugh [Jackman] and had an amazing time in Australia. I’m sure they’re doing their own thing with it, and I’m sure Channing will be great.”

Plot details are still being kept under wraps on Tatum’s iteration of the character, but with San Diego Comic-Con now in full swing, that may soon change (though major developments will likely be saved for next year’s Con).

Directed by Rise of the Planet of the Apes helmer Rupert Wyatt, Gambit will hit theaters on October 7th, 2016.
