James Gunn insisted on a key Avengers: Infinity War change

May 15, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn insisted on one key change to Avengers: Infinity War according to the film’s writers.

Now that Infinity War is entertaining fans in cinemas around the world, certain details regarding the film’s inner workings are starting to come to light.

One such detail is that director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.1 and Vol.2, James Gunn, insisted that Peter fulfil his promise to Gamora. This is according to Infinity War’s writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who recently spoke with Backstory Magazine (via The Playlist):

“The only change [James] really went deep on and we had more than one conversation about was the decision by Star-Lord to shoot Gamora and then bubbles come out obviously. So we wrestled with, ‘Would it be interesting if Star-Lord could not bring himself to fulfill his promise and kill the woman he loves?’ It’s not a traditional hero arc. We were trying to get to a failure [moment] because his love for her outweighed his duty in some ways. And Gunn and Pratt were really adamant that he would do it. So we did it, and of course, it didn’t hurt our story to do it, because it’s not gonna work.”

It was certainly a powerful moment in the film, especially for Peter and Gamora’s relationship, which now spans three movies. But what do you think? Are you happy that James Gunn and Chris Pratt fought for this change?
