SDCC: Marc Webb talks Spider-Man, director “sad to surrender” franchise

July 11, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

MTV caught up with director Marc Webb this week at Comic-Con to talk about his upcoming directing duties on new TV show Limitless, but couldn’t resist asking him about Spider-Man and his views on the franchise now moving in a different direction.

With the web-slinger now firmly in the mix with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and The Avengers, many changes have taken place, including recasting the role previously played by Andrew Garfield with young Tom Holland (The Impossible), and swapping filmmakers with Webb being replaced by Jon Watts (Cop Car). Webb worked on both Amazing Spider-Man films, with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ultimately stalling the franchise again despite its box-office of over $708 million.

But despite the lukewarm reaction to the film and the underwhelming box-office (Sony had hoped the sequel would crack the $1billion mark), Webb spoke fondly of his experience on the two films and was particularly gracious when speaking about the franchise’s new direction.

“I’m really psyched that Spider-Man is going back to the Marvel universe, I’m really excited to see that incarnation,” he said. “And Jon Watts is directing it, I knew him from the old music video days and he’d done some really fantastic music videos so it’s really exciting. It’s sad a little bit to surrender that in a way. But it’s as it must be I guess. I think there’s a huge capacity for reinvention of the realm of the Spider-Man universe… there’s a lot of different way so interpret that character… so I’m curious to see how that evolves.”

Spider-Man is set for his debut in the MCU with next spring’s Captain America: Civil War, before his first solo film in 2017, which will star Holland and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler), who is in talks to play Aunt May.
