Shazam could play a part in the wider DCEU, plans already exist for potential sequels

July 19, 2018 by Samuel Brace

There are plans for the future of Shazam! beyond that of the upcoming solo film, including the character playing a part in the wider DCEU.

There exists a certain vagueness regarding what future films will or will not play a part in the interconnected DC Extended Universe. The newly announced Joker, for example, will not be linked to the likes of Justice League or Wonder Woman.

The upcoming Shazam movie will however be part of the DCEU, and producer Peter Safran has recently teased the possibility of the character meeting up with some of DC’s other heroes, telling Entertainment Weekly: “I wouldn’t be surprised to see Shazam play a role in the DCU.  He exists in that world.”

Zachary Levi, who plays the titular hero, has expressed his excitement at the prospect of Shazam teaming up with members of the Justice League: “I would lose my shit if that happened, I would lose all of the shits. I remember thinking, ‘If I get this and if this movie does well enough and if Justice League does well enough and they make another Justice League … maybe I’ll be on that next poster with all those guys.”

If Shazam! is a success and sequels to the film are ordered, there are also plans on how to deal with the inevitable aging of Asher Angel, the actor who plays the child Billy Batson: “It’s something we’ve considered and have plans in place for sequels that take into account those realities,” Safran said.

While you’ll be likely wanting to wait to see Shazam! before rendering an opinion, would you be interested in seeing the character team up with the likes of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman in a future Justice League film?

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).”

Shazam will see Zachary Levi starring as the titular superhero, with Asher Angel as his young alter-ego Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Grace Fulton as Mary Marvel, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the Wizard,  Adam Brody as Freddie Freeman, Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, D. J. Cotrona as Pedro Pena, Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, and Michelle Borth as Mary Bromfield. The film is set for release on April 5th 2019.
