Peyton Reed on how Avengers: Infinity War impacted Ant-Man and the Wasp

July 23, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Warning: Spoilers for Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp follow…

While Avengers: Infinity War is going to have enormous ramifications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward, it wasn’t until the mid-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp that we felt the impact of Thanos’ Snap as Scott Lang’s Ant-Man finds himself trapped inside the Quantum Realm, unaware that Hope (Evangeline Lilly), Hank (Michael Douglas) and Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer) have all turned to ashes.

Speaking to Uproxx, director Peyton Reed has shared his reaction to the climax of Infinity War, as well as discussing how the Ant-Man and the Wasp team incorporated it into their own movie.

“Oh God, when I first saw that moment in Infinity War – in an early cut where the effects weren’t done; I think they were still grayscale effects – it killed me,” said Reed. “It was like Saving Private Ryan stuff. It’s like, oh my god, the extended Peter Parker moment was fantastic. I love it. The thing that really appealed to us, was because it was a thing the whole way through of how are we going to deal with this issue [from] Infinity War, and it occurred to us we were going to do it in an Ant-Man and the Wasp way. Which was to tell our story, make it self-contained, and make the ending of the movie with everything wrapped up in such a neat bow at the end of the movie.

Reed went on to discuss how they attempted to stage the mid-credit scene so that audiences would not immediately guess what was going to occur: “And even in the scene, we introduce all of these elements all at once to the audience. It’s like, oh, this is the first time I’ve seen Janet in street clothes. And they are in a parking lot? And there’s Luis’ van? And Scott in the suit and he’s going to the quantum realm in a shrunken tunnel? So everyone’s mind is on trying to make sense of the stuff at hand, so that hopefully the thing we were ultimately doing wasn’t immediately occurring to them.”

From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes Ant-Man and The Wasp, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a super hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.

Ant-Man and the Wasp sees Peyton Reed returning to the director’s chair and stars Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michael Pena (Luis), David Dastmalchian (Kurt), Abby Ryder Fortson (Cassie Lang), Judy Greer (Maggie), Bobby Cannavale (Paxton) and T.I. (Dave), while new additions to the cast include Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet Van Dyne, Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster/Goliath, Hannah John-Kamen as The Ghost, Walton Goggins as Sonny Burch and Randall Park as Jimmy Woo.
