CBS planning more Star Trek: Discovery spinoffs

August 7, 2018 by George Chrysostomou

There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the Star Trek franchise over the last week, with the return of Patrick Stewart in a brand new Star Trek: The Next Generation sequel series, not to mention the potential for more spinoffs set in the Trek universe.

In an all access interview with Deadline, CBS producer Julie McNamara had this to say when discussing the future of the franchise in the small screen:

“We’ve really talked about virtually all of the characters who popped up Star Trek: Discovery as potential spin-off shows. It’s obviously very much driven by our conversations with Alex Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and the other creators involved. I wouldn’t say at this point that we are actively pursuing a Michelle Yeoh series but it has been discussed.”

“My goal is that there should be a Star Trek something on all the time on All Access,” adds CBS All Access president Marc DeBevoise. “We’re looking at limited series for some Trek shows, and we are looking at ongoing series for some other Trek shows. We’ve obviously announced the one that’s coming next with Sir Patrick Stewart, but we have more in development there.”

In a content driven era, where franchises like these are continually pushing out more variety of programming, it’s no surprise that CBS is looking at producing more series featuring established and beloved characters. Whilst it is unlikely that many of these will be pushed through, it is certainly of note that they are being discussed in the first place and may provide some answers as to what direction the studio wishes to take the franchise in the future.
