It star on how “awesome” it was to work with such a different Bill Skarsgard on Castle Rock

August 16, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Chosen Jacobs, who starred as Mike Hanlon in It, says that getting to work with Bill Skarsgard again on Castle Rock is “awesome”.

It must have been a strange experience for the kid actors on It when working with Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise, especially as they were purposefully kept away from him on set. Chosen Jacobs, who played Mike Hanlon in the film finds himself teaming up with Skarsgard again, however, on another Stephen King led project, this time, Hulu’s Castle Rock.

To Jacobs’ great joy, he is actually getting to interact with Skarsgard when looking like an actual human and the young actor spoke to ComicBook.com about how much he’s enjoyed this experience:

“I auditioned for Castle Rock, and when I auditioned, I didn’t know it was Castle Rock, because they don’t say the name, but when I found out that I booked it, and then I flew up to Massachusetts, which is where I’m from, and I saw his picture on the wall. I was like, ‘Wait, Bill’s in this? It was kind of an awesome thing because shooting IT, they kind of kept him away from us in the beginning just so that it would up the ante a little bit, so to actually see him, and to be able to experience back and forth conversation with him just as a human being was very awesome for me, just to see the talent even in that aspect. Because even though he’s playing a character, it’s less of a caricature as Pennywise is. It’s more so, okay, how does Bill act as an actual human being?”

It’s certainly fun to see Skarsgard playing such a wildly different character (though equally creepy in his own right) on Castle Rock. Whether his character, The Kid, will be as memorable as Pennywise, however, is another matter.

Based on Stephen King’s works, the series is set in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine that is featured in many of his novels. The series stars Andre Holland (Moonlight), Bill Skarsgård (It), Melanie Lynskey (Togetherness), Sissy Spacek (Carrie), Jane Levy (Suburgatory), Scott Glenn (Daredevil), Terry O’Quinn (Lost) and Chosen Jacobs (It) as they get caught up in the town’s mysterious darkness.

A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half, IT and Needful Things, as well as novella The Body and numerous short stories such as Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption are either set there or contain references to Castle Rock. Castle Rock is an original suspense/thriller — a first-of-its-kind reimagining that explores the themes and worlds uniting the entire King canon, while brushing up against some of his most iconic and beloved stories.
