Karl Urban hopeful Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth will join Star Trek 4

September 8, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions’ plans for Star Trek 4 were thrown into turmoil last month when it was reported that both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth had rejected offers to reprise their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and his father George Kirk.

With rumours circulating about possible recastings for the characters, co-star Karl Urban has revealed that he’s hopeful that the contract situation will be resolved – although he doubts the sequel will go ahead if a deal cannot be done.

“I believe the status of the project is really hinging on the availability and the contract negotiations of the two Chrises,” said Urban (via Trek Movie). “Hopefully, we get back for another movie, or two of them. We are just sort of waiting on negotiations. I’m confident we will. Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine subsequently have done big movies, and their quotes have gone up and so I am pretty confident though that Paramount and those guys, they will figure it out. Because I know Chris. We were all in touch recently and everybody wants to do it and make it happen. So, if Paramount is willing there will be a way to make it happen. So, fingers crossed.”

Meanwhile, speaking to Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Outlaw King, Chris Pine has revealed that there’s be no progress since the news broke, and he is unsure at this point whether he’ll end up being part of the film: “I don’t know. I mean, I’d love to be involved. We’ll see what happens. You know, I’ll await the phone call. Until then, I look forward to it.”

Can Star Trek 4 move ahead without Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth? Would you be willing to accept a recasting? Let us know in the comments below…
