Fox delays X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Gambit, sets untitled Deadpool movie for this December

September 28, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Just a day after the arrival of the first trailer, 20th Century Fox has announced that it has decided to push back the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix for a second time, with the film now slated to open on June 7th 2019.

Dark Phoenix was originally supposed to arrive this November, but it was pushed back to February 14th of next year due to extensive reshoots, which are currently filming. As yet, there’s no word as to why the movie has been delayed once again, although expect rumours to begin circulating momentarily.

Meanwhile, Fox has also announced that Gambit has been pushed back for the umpteenth time, with March 13th 2020 the next release date that the Channing Tatum-headlined solo project will miss (and likely it’s last, given that Disney will control the X-Men rights by that point).

However, in more positive news for X-fans, the studio has set an untitled Deadpool project for December 21st of this year – although rumours are suggesting that it won’t be a brand new project, but rather a remixed PG-13 version of Deadpool 2.

Following the announcement, Reynolds shared the following Princess Bride-inspired tease featuring his Merc with a Mouth alongside Fred Savage…

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Evan Peters (Quicksilver) and Olivia Munn (Psylocke) alongside new additions Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings). It is set for release on June 7th 2019.
