Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse tracking $30 million domestic opening, secures China release

November 22, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Spider-Man swings back into theaters next month as Sony unleashes the animated superhero adventure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, marking the big screen debut for the Ultimate Spider-Man incarnation of the character, Miles Morales.

According to Variety, the film is tracking a $25 million to $30 million debut in North America for its opening weekend of December 14th to December 16th, where it is expected to fend off competition from fellow new releases The Mule ($15 million projection) and Mortal Engines ($12 million to $18 million projection).

Into the Spider-Verse, which has a budget of around $90 million, will face some stiff competition over the holiday season as both Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns arrive in cinemas the following week.

However, in some good news for Sony, the film has secured a China release for December 21st, and the studio will no doubt be hoping that some of Venom’s huge success in the Middle Kingdom rubs off on the animated Spider-Man feature.
