Margot Robbie says Birds of Prey “isn’t very serious”

December 5, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Margot Robbie, the star of DC’s Birds of Prey, says that the film “isn’t very serious” in regards to its tone.

The DCEU hasn’t been the slam dunk many expected it to be, as a result, it’s hard to know what exactly to expect from films like Birds of Prey in terms of their tone. Will they go even darker than past films or will DC embrace a lighter touch?

Well, Margot Robbie, who is returning as Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn), has told Jimmy Fallon in a recent interview that the film isn’t very dark at all.

Speaking regarding the film’s bombastic and amusing title, Robbie said: “It’s not a very serious movie, so we thought the title should reflect that. Birds of Prey makes it sound very serious and [the title] is kinda like Harley adding her ‘Hey, I’m in this too!'”

Are you excited by the prospect of Birds of Prey being a more light and fun affair? Of course, a lot can change in the meantime with the film being so far off.

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is directing Birds of Prey from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) with Margot Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad role as Harley Quinn alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo) as The Huntress, Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless) as Renee Montoya, Elle Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy) as Cassandra Cain and Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin) as Black Mask. It is set for release on February 7th 2020.
