Star Wars: Episode IX to introduce a new red Stormtrooper

December 10, 2018 by Gary Collinson

With rumours circulating that we may get our first look at Star Wars: Episode IX this month with the arrival of a teaser trailer, fan site Making Star Wars has shared a new report which offers up a few tidbits of information about the final chapter of the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

In addition to some brief details on three locations – a Swamp World (that doesn’t seem to be Dagobah), a Desert World (that doesn’t seem to be Jakku) and a Jungle World – the inclusion of the Knights of Ren and confirmation that Billy Dee Williams’ Lando will be rocking cape, the article goes on to share details about a new class of First Order Stormtrooper we can expect to see:

There’s a new type of elite trooper in Star Wars: Episode IX that is pretty much a solid red Stormtrooper with black stripes. The trooper does not appear to be one of the red pilots from Star Wars: Resistance, but it almost sounds like they were developed together. One theory I currently hold is that Elrik Vonreg from Resistance might be an unused design for this new Episode IX trooper, but that’s a guess. The trooper is not just a First Order Stormtrooper painted red either, as the helmet is different. Ironically, we did hear the trooper was a pilot but for all we know these are like Death Troopers and they can fly ships too. We also can’t confirm there are more than one in the film at this time.

It is of course not unusual for a Star Wars movie to introduce a new type of Stormtrooper, but it’s always nice to get another variation of the Empire/First Order’s elite troops. And, if you’re unfamiliar with Star Wars Resistance and Elrik Vonreg, here’s what the character looks like…

Star Wars: Episode IX is set for release on December 20th 2019 with J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) directing a cast that includes Star Wars veterans Daisy Ridley (Rey), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Lupita Nyong’o (Maz Kanata), Domhnall Gleeson (General Hux), Kelly Marie Tran (Rose Tico), Joonas Suotamo (Chewbacca), Billie Lourd (Lieutenant Connix), Greg Grunberg (Snap Wexley), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa) as well as new additions Naomi Ackie (Lady Mabeth), Richard E. Grant (Logan), Dominic Monaghan (Lost), Matt Smith (Doctor Who) and Keri Russell (The Americans).
