Sony tried to offload Holmes & Watson to Netflix

December 29, 2018 by Amie Cranswick

Over the past year, Netflix has earned itself a bit of a reputation as a dumping ground for studios looking to offload their turkeys – see The Cloverfield Paradox and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, both of which it picked up for distribution from Paramount and Warner Bros. respectively.

However, it seems that the streaming giant does have some standards, as Deadline is reporting that Sony had tried to sell off the new Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly comedy Holmes & Watson after disastrous test screenings, but Netflix rejected the offer.

The disastrous test screening reactions for Holmes & Watson were followed by disastrous reviews (9% critic score and 27% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes), and the comedy has earned just $15 million in its first four days at the Christmas box office from a production budget of $42 million.
