Todd McFarlane’s R-rated Spawn will be a “dark, ugly two hours worth of movie”

January 2, 2019 by Matt Rodgers

Back in October Todd McFarlane said that his R-rated Spawn reboot would be so dark it’ll make kids cry. Well, now he’s back spreading the sunshine in an interview with The Nerdist, where he reveals that his Blumhouse Productions financed film will be a “dark, ugly two hours worth of movie”. Book your family tickets now!

Adamant that he wants to go in “different corner, that nobody is touching right now”, McFarlane went on to say that he’d like his long-gestating film to be a “deeply serious, dark, almost disturbing R-version of a superhero character”, adding that they’ll be “no joy” or “no fun lines in it”, and that it’ll be a”dark, ugly two hours worth of movie”. So, no John Leguizamo clowns then?

With Academy Award winner Jamie Fox signed on as the titular antihero, and nominee Jeremy Renner as Detective Twitch, the prospect of seeing another attempt at successfully summoning Spawn to the big screen after 1997’s much-maligned flop, seems to be gaining some real traction. On the current state of the movie, McFarlane said “we’re putting financing together” and “we’ve done some pre-production, designed a bunch of stuff”, but also hinted that he still has a lot of work to do in order to sell the concept of a pitch black movie comic-book movie.

Let us know whether you’re excited or worried by what McFarlane has had to say in the comments section below…
