Captain Marvel “planting seeds” for the MCU’s Secret Invasion

January 9, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Captain Marvel might be the film to plant the seeds for the MCU’s take on the Secret Invasion story.

Those paying attention to Captain Marvel will be well aware from trailers and images that the film will feature the arrival of the Skrulls into the MCU. But does this have any larger ramifications?

There’s a story in the comics called Secret Invasion where the Skrulls infiltrate earth, posing as various Marvel heroes. And when asked on a set visit (via Screen Rant) how Secret Invasion impacts Captain Marvel, executive producer Jonathan Schwartz said:

“Yes, we talked about Secret Invasion. I wouldn’t go into this movie saying, ‘Which one of these superheroes is a Skrull?’ Because Carol is more or less the first superhero to show up on Earth. But are we planting seeds for future movies? Always.”

So it seems possible that this could be the start of something bigger for the Skrulls in the MCU. What do you think, would you like to see the MCU tackle Secret Invasion? Let us know in the comments below…

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). It is set for release on March 8th.
