Lana Condor explains why Jubilee doesn’t feature in X-Men: Dark Phoenix

January 13, 2019 by Gary Collinson

While X-Men: Dark Phoenix brings back the majority of the cast of 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse for what looks certain to be the final instalment in Fox’s X-Men series, there will be one omission from Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, with Lana Condor revealing that she was unable to reprise her role as Jubilee due to scheduling conflicts.

“I didn’t end up doing Dark Phoenix cause I was doing To All the Boys,” Condor tells Collider. “I hope X-Men lives on so hopefully in the future I’ll be able to go back to that family because it’s where I feel very indebted and loyal to… It’s funny because I, of course, love X-Men forever. X-Men was such an incredible experience because I had never worked before, I was so excited to be there. I love Jubilee and I hope that in the future she’ll get her due.”

Despite being one of the more popular X-Men characters – thanks in no small part to the 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series – Jubilee has been pretty short-changed on the big screen. She’s appeared in four movies, portrayed by three different actresses, and never managed so much as a single line of dialogue.

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Evan Peters (Quicksilver) and Olivia Munn (Psylocke) alongside new additions Kota Eberhardt (The Persian Connection) as Selene, Andrew Stehlin (Hacksaw Ridge) as Red Lotus, and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings). It is set for release on June 7th 2019.
