Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame to receive a live-action remake

January 17, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Disney is turning its attention to the 1996 animated musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame for its latest live-action remake.

Deadline us reporting that Tony Award-winner David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) has been tapped to write the script, while composer Alan Menken (who composed the music for the original, along with the likes of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid) and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas) will write the music.

Although the project is in the very early stages of development, Frozen and Beauty and the Beast actor Josh Gad is on board as a producer, and it is said that he may also lend his voice to the lead character.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is based upon the Victor Hugo novel and follows Quasimodo, the titular hunchback, as he looks for acceptance in society. The animated movie was a solid hit for Disney, grossing $325 million worldwide and earning Menken an Academy Award nomination for his score.

The project joins an ever-growing list of animated Disney remakes, with this year alone set to bring us Dumbo, Aladdin, and The Lion King.
