Channing Tatum considering directing X-Men spinoff Gambit

January 21, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Since it was first announced way back in 2014, 20th Century Fox’s planned X-Men spinoff Gambit has proven to be a bit of a poisoned chalice for the superhero franchise.

The project, which has Channing Tatum attached to play the card-throwing Cajun mutant Remy LeBeau, has passed through the hands of directors Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) and Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean), while its production and release date have been pushed back more times than we care to remember.

Currently, the movie is slated for release on March 13th 2020, and with no director attached at present, Deadline is reporting that Tatum himself is now considering taking the helm for what would be his feature directorial debut.

Recent rumours have suggested that,, given the impending Disney takeover, Fox has already decided to pull the plug on Gambit, Doctor Doom, Silver Surfer, Kitty Pryde, Multiple Man and X-Force. However, this report is unconfirmed, and it has been stated previously that Disney will press ahead with any Fox releases which have already commenced production by the time the acquisition is complete.

If that’s true, then Fox and Tatum have a couple of months to get cameras rolling on Gambit – but given the fact they’ve been trying to do so unsuccessfully for almost five years, we’d be very surprised at this point if it actually happens.
