Danai Gurira exiting The Walking Dead in season 10

February 8, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Earlier in the week, following the announcement that AMC has renewed the show for a tenth season, it was reported that Danai Gurira’s time on The Walking Dead could be coming to an end soon, and now we have confirmation that the actress is set to become the latest star to depart the ailing zombie series.

Deadline is reporting that Gurira, who has portrayed the character of Michonne since the third season, has signed a new deal with AMC which will see her appearing in just a handful of episodes in season ten – similar to that of Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) and Lauren Cohan (Maggie Rhee) this season.

AMC has declined to comment on Gurira’s status, but it is thought that the producers are hoping to leave the door open for future guest appearances from Michonne, as they have with Cohan’s Maggie.

Since joining The Walking Dead, Gurira has been enjoying success as a playwright, and broke out onto the big screen last year thanks to her roles in Marvel’s superhero blockbusters Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. She is expected to return as Okoye, the head of Black Panther’s Dora Milaje, in April’s Avengers: Endgame.

The Walking Dead’s ninth season resumes this Sunday on AMC; watch a sneak peek from the midseason premiere here.
