Marvel’s Kevin Feige discusses his favourite Black Panther scene

February 19, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having managed to achieve what has eluded every other comic book movie before it by earning a nomination, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther will look to go one step further this weekend by taking home the Oscar for Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards.

In the lead up to the ceremony, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been chatting to The Hollywood Reporter, during which he shared his favourite moment from the superhero blockbuster:

“That amazing line, that [director Ryan Coogler] and his co-writer, Joe Robert Cole, wrote for Killmonger as he lay dying outside the vibranium mines looking over Wakanda,” said Feige. T’Challa says, ‘I can try to heal you,’ and he says, ‘Why, so you can lock me up? Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped ships, ’cause they knew death was better than bondage.’ That was in the first draft. It was one of the best lines we ever read. We said, ‘There are going to be a lot of revisions, but don’t touch that line.’ And Ryan said, ‘That’s the line I thought you’d tell me to cut.’ And we said, ‘On the contrary, keep it and build more of the movie around it.'”

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Sterling K.
