Ben Affleck on stepping down as Batman and breaking the news to his young son

March 8, 2019 by Gary Collinson

It had been on the cards since the Sad Affleck interview in the wake of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’s negative reviews back in 2016 really, but this past January finally brought us confirmation that Ben Affleck has stepped down as the Dark Knight and will be passing the cape and cowl onto another actor for Matt Reeves’ solo movie The Batman.

Affleck has been out and about on the press tour for his new film Triple Frontier [read our review here], but as you’d expect he’s also been fielding questions about his DC Extended Universe exit.

“That was part of the problem,” said Affleck in an interview with IGN, referring to his own time in the director’s chair on the planned solo movie. “We worked on the script, I was trying to figure out how to crack it, and I was never happy enough with it where I thought it was worth going out and making it because I just didn’t want to do a version that I wasn’t really excited by, so I still don’t know.”

Meanwhile, chatting to Entertainment Tonight, Affleck discussed how his 7-year-old son reacted to the news that his father was no longer going to be Batman:

“He took the news okay. He kind of understands that there’s time for everything. [Samuel] is not quite old enough to understand that I was gonna direct [a  movie], but I couldn’t figure out how to do it. I didn’t love it enough. I just kinda stuck with like, you know, ‘It was my turn and now it somebody else’s turn.’ Because he understands turn taking.”

Meanwhile, he also went on to confirm that Reeves’ Batman movie will feature a younger Caped Crusader, adding that: “I’m looking forward to it. They’ve got a great director. They’re doing a kind of, I don’t want to give away anything because they get…but they’re doing a young version, a more starting-out version with a younger guy.”
