Kevin Feige explains why Nick Fury never used Captain Marvel’s pager before Avengers: Infinity War

March 11, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Ever since the post-credits scene of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, where Nick Fury used his pager to contact Captain Marvel in the aftermath of Thanos’ crushing victory, there’s been questions why the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. never felt the need to use this earlier – like when a giant portal opened in the skies over New York and an invading alien army attacked the city.

We know of course that the real-world reason for this is that nobody had thought up the idea for the pager at the time, but now in an interview with SlashFilm, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has attempted to offer an in-universe explanation:

“Well, I’d say two things. One, she does say it’s gotta be a real emergency, right?” said Feige. “The other thing I’d say is how do you know he never hit it? How do we know he never pushed it before? We’ve never seen him push it before. That doesn’t mean he never did.”

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty), Ana Ayora (The Big Wedding), Vik Sahay (Chuck), Kenneth Mitchell (Star Trek: Discovery), Chuku Modo (The Good Doctor), Clark Gregg (The Avengers) and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
