X-Men: Dark Phoenix ending was reshot because it was too similar to another superhero movie

June 1, 2019 by Samuel Brace

James McAvoy, one of the stars of X-Men: Dark Phoenix, has revealed that the film’s ending was reshot because it was too similar to another superhero movie.

While X-Men’s future may lie with Disney and the MCU, for now, the final ever Fox produced entry into the franchise is on its way with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. But crafting a fitting final installment wasn’t all that simple.

According to Xavier actor James McAvoy, they had to reshoot the ending of the film because it bore too many similarities to another superhero movie. Speaking to YahooUK, the actor said: “The finale HAD to change. There was a lot of overlap and parallels with another superhero movie that came out re—a while ago. And we had no idea that we were…”

“They had spies on set,” added co-star Michael Fassbender, “and [they] basically stole our ideas.”

“We were basically trawling through the source material it seems,” McAvoy finished.

As to what this other superhero movie was, we do not know. With Dark Phoenix being a cosmic-themed tale, perhaps its original ending reflected some kind of space-set finale of another movie. Fingers crossed the new ending they came up with was a good addition.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix sees Simon Kinberg directing a cast that includes franchise veterans Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) and Evan Peters (Quicksilver) alongside new additions Kota Eberhardt (The Persian Connection) as Selene, Andrew Stehlin (Hacksaw Ridge) as Red Lotus, and Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Lamar Johnson (Kings). It is set for release on June 5th 2019.
