Aladdin tops Independence Day to become the biggest movie of Will Smith’s career

June 30, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

Having reached the $800 million milestone last week, Walt Disney Pictures’ Aladdin has now pushed its global haul to $824.1 million, topping the $817.4 million gross of 1996’s Independence Day to become the biggest box office hit of Will Smith’s career.

Smith took to Instagram to express his thanks and gratitude to everyone who’s been out to see the live-action remake of the animated classic, stating that: “To be in this game as long as I’ve been in this game, and to have my biggest movie at this point in my career, I just want to say thank you.”

Aladdin continues to display some impressive legs at the box office in its sixth weekend, although with Spider-Man: Far From Home and The Lion King incoming these next two weeks it seems pretty safe to say its days are numbered.

Aladdin is directed by Guy Ritchie (King Arthur: Legend of the Sword) and features a cast that includes Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine), Will Smith (Genie), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), Navid Negahban (The Sultan), Nasim Pedrad (Dalia), Billy Magnussen (Prince Anders), Numan Acar (Hakim), Alan Tudyk (Iago) and Frank Welker (Abu).
