David Ayer in talks to direct WWII tank thriller El-Alamein

August 9, 2019 by Liam Waddington

After approaching tank warfare in 2014’s Fury, David Ayer may be returning to the genre as he is currently in negotiations to direct another World War II tank movie titled El-Alamein for Lionsgate.

El-Alamein will tell the true story of a series of battles in the desert that pitted Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery leading Britain’s Eighth Army, and German General Field Marshal Erwin Rommel leading the German/Axis Forces. The battles occurred in Egypt, in and around an area named after a railway stop called El Alamein, and were fought to gain control of the Suez Canal and reinforce the region.

The script originally was written by David Self, however, the most recent draft was written by James Coyne. Di Bonaventura Pictures’ Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are set to produce the title alongside Thomas Augsberger. The project is being overseen by Lionsgate executive James Myers.

Ayer previously directed the WWII tank battle film Fury, which starred Brad Pitt. Additionally, he wrote the upcoming crime drama The Tax Collector, and directed the Netflix film Bright and DC supervillain team-up Suicide Squad.

El-Alamein doesn’t have a release date yet, but it is reportedly scheduled to start production in early 2020.
