Bryce Dallas Howard says The Mandalorian directors had a surprising amount of creative freedom

August 21, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Bryce Dallas Howard, one of the directors for Star Wars’ The Mandalorian TV series, says that the filmmakers had a surprising amount of creative freedom on the project.

When it comes to giant franchises like Star Wars and Marvel, one doesn’t usually expect the directors involved to have much creative freedom. This is exactly the situation Bryce Dallas Howard was expecting when she signed up to direct an episode of The Mandalorian.

However, she was pleasantly surprised by how much leeway she and the other directors had, even telling her surprised father, Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard, all about it. Speaking to Screen Rant, she said:

“I really thought that I was going to just basically be like a soldier. And the reality was that both Jon and Dave wanted each of the filmmakers to very much put our stamp on everything. I was shocked, honestly. I kept telling my dad, and he was like, ‘Really?!'”

Allowing directors to express themselves is normally a positive sign so fingers crossed this translates well to the screen, shaping The Mandalorian into a dynamic and exciting piece of television.

After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

The Mandalorian sees Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) leading a cast that includes Gina Carano (Deadpool), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Nick Nolte (Afflication), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Emily Swallow (Supernatural), Omid Abtahi (American Gods), Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) and Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man). It is set to premiere on Disney+ on November 12th 2019.
