J.J. Abrams on whether Kylo Ren is beyond redemption in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

September 1, 2019 by Samuel Brace

J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, has addressed if Kylo Ren is beyond redemption.

There are many questions that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be able to answer and one of them is if Kylo Ren is beyond redemption. The villain has done some truly heinous things in the trilogy so far but is it possible that he is still brought back to the light?

One person who would know is director J.J. Abrams and he discussed with MTV what lies ahead, as well as commenting on Adam Driver’s performance as the villain: “I will say that with an actor like Adam Driver, you can never limit what that man can do. I will say, without talking about redemption or not, that he is mind-blowing in this. He’s brought a whole other level to this, so I can’t wait to see what happens with him.”

These comments about the depth and range of Driver’s performance perhaps suggest that the character will be dealing with plenty of inner turmoil in the film. So, who knows, perhaps a redemption arc is still on the cards.
