SPOILERS: Gotham showrunner talks The Joker

October 7, 2015 by Scott J. Davis

Warning: Spoilers from Monday’s episode of Gotham follow…

So it seems that a few “jokers” were left in the pack in Monday’s episode of Gotham, which saw Jerome killed off. Many had suspected that the character was a younger incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime, but in somewhat of a shock scenario, Jerome (played by Cameron Monaghan) is no more. However, that’s not the end of the story, as showrunner Bruno Heller spoke to ComicBook.com about the shock twist, and whether we will still see The Joker in the show’s future.

“There was no second guessing there; it’s very much part of the story we’re trying to tell….The Joker is very much the crown jewel of DC villains, I think everyone would agree,” the showrunner said. “He’s the most mysterious and the most powerful and so the story of his origins needed to be as complex and profound and as real as possible. We decided early on to tell the long story of the creation of the Joker, which will involve many more twists and turns than the audience will be expecting.”

But there is more: ComicBook.com also theorised that perhaps the Joker may not be quite what we are expecting, with the website suggesting that Barbara Kean could in fact become the iconic villain. Barbara worked closely with Jerome, and while there was no official confirmation, Heller didn’t shoot the idea down completely:

“100% possible. One of the central themes of the DC world is transformation and revelation. Absolutely, those kinds of – I wouldn’t want to call it playing with people’s expectations or gender expectations – but we’ve absolutely considered the possibility of a female Joker, and we haven’t… well I’ll stop myself from saying more because I won’t be able to stop revealing things.”

Gotham: Season 2 is now showing on FOX.
