John Wick director on the possibility of adding more Matrix stars into future instalments

September 11, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Chad Stahelski, director of the John Wick trilogy, has discussed whether there is a possibility of adding more The Matrix actors, in addition to Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King, in future instalments of the franchise.

In an interview with ComicBookMovie, this is what the director had to say about inserting The Matrix actors such as Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving down the line:

“You know, Keanu and I talk a lot about where we want to go. We didn’t finish John Wick 3 and have this great big plan of how to go into Chapter 4. It’s something we’re constantly thinking about and we try not to force things,” Stahelski said.

“I certainly don’t want to include a cast member to try to get somebody in as a gag and work a story around that. If we create these great characters and you know, in my head, it makes sense to put Carrie-Anne in there or Hugo Weaving or any of our Matrix compadres, and it works and if they’re interested, that’s always a plus because they’re friends and I think they’re all excellent performers. So it’s yet-to-be-seen.”

Additionally, Stahelski didn’t confirm whether or not he would be directing Chapter 4, although he did state he will remain attached to the franchise “in some capacity, probably till my career is long over.” Therefore, it’s safe to assume that with his continuous involvement, he may have a hand-in adding actors like Moss and Weaving if the character is best suited for them, rather than for solely fan service.

John Wick is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum reunites Keanu Reeves with director Chad Stahelski and also features returning cast members Ian McShane, Laurence Fishburne, and Lance Reddick alongside newcomers Hiroyuki Sanada (47 Ronin, The Wolverine), Anjelica Huston (Isle of Dogs), Halle Berry (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Asia Kate Dillon (Billions), Mark Dacascos (Lucky Day), Jerome Flynn (Game of Thrones), Jason Mantzoukas (The House), Tiger Hu Chen (Man of Tai Chi), Robin Lord Taylor (Gotham) and The Raid’s Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif Rahman.
