Todd Phillips says we’ll never see an extended cut or deleted scene from Joker

October 19, 2019 by Gary Collinson

With the original cut of Joker reportedly running some 30 minutes longer than the final version, it seems there’s plenty of material left on the cutting room floor should Warner Bros. have any ambitions of putting together an ‘Ultimate Edition’-style extended cut of the acclaimed DC movie.

However, it seems we can safely rule out an extended version should director Todd Phillips have his way, as the filmmaker has revealed to Collider than he “fucking hates them” and won’t be releasing so much as a deleted scene from the Joaquin Phoenix-headlined film.

“I hate fucking extended cuts,” said Phillips. “I hate deleted scenes. They’re deleted for a reason,” he explained. “The movie that exists is exactly the movie I want it to be and I will never show a deleted scene.”

Despite his view on the deleted scenes, Phillips did go on to describe one that he enjoyed, the director adding that:

“We did cut this fun thing together… of [Joker] walking out on Murray Franklin, because every time the guy would go, Murray would stand and go, ‘Please welcome Joker,’ and the curtains would open and he comes out and does something different every time. The thing in the movie, he spins, he kisses the woman. But we cut this thing together of ‘Please welcome Joker,’ and I don’t know, we did it 13 times maybe, and they’re all different and they’re so funny and there’s so many good ones. I was like, ‘Oh, I wonder why I didn’t use that one?'”

Are you disappointed that we likely won’t get to see any deleted scenes from Joker? Let us know in the comments below or on our social channels @flickeringmyth…

Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
