Julie Andrews “loved” Mary Poppins Returns

November 3, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Disney brought the iconic Mary Poppins back to the big screen last year with Mary Poppins Returns, as Emily Blunt took on the unenviable task of filling the shoes of Julie Andrews as the magical nanny some 54 years after Andrews’ Oscar-winning turn in the 1964 classic.

Unlike her original co-star Dick Van Dyke, Andrews turned down the opportunity to make a cameo appearance in the 2018 movie (her reason being to keep the focus on Emily Blunt rather than potentially distracting audiences), and now almost a year after the film’s release, the screen legend has shared her thoughts on the sequel:

“I loved it,” said Andrews, responding to a fan question on Watch What Happens Live. “Look, the first film was made over 50 years ago, 60 years ago. I think it’s about time a second one was allowed. But also, this had nothing to do with the first one. It wasn’t as if they were repeating the first story. They had umpteen P. L. Travers books of Mary Poppins in the vault. So they had to make a new one.”

At this point, Mary Poppins’ future seems a little uncertain. Director Rob Marshall suggested back in January that a Mary Poppins Returns follow-up was in its “early stages”, but Disney later denied that the studio was in any kind of active development on a sequel. Maybe we’ll have to wait until 2072 for that third movie.
